Year-over-Year Growth (YoY)
Definition
What is Year-over-Year Growth (YoY)?
Year-over-Year Growth compares a metric with the same period in the previous year to reduce misreading caused by normal seasonality.
Business context
Why does it matter?
YoY is a useful direction signal, but base effects, promotion timing, inflation, and one-time events can distort it. Reports should include absolute values and comparison conditions.
Decision prompts
Three questions to ask in practice
- 01
Who owns the data and the operating process?
- 02
Are normal flows and exceptions both defined?
- 03
How does the decision affect cost, delivery, and customer promises?
Understanding the term is the start. Making the tradeoff is the work.
If you are evaluating Shopify Plus, headless architecture, growth systems, or cross-market operations, Tenten can help frame the decision.
